Traces of Movement

2017 – 2018

Traces of Movement examines painting and its relation to movement and the physical body. The project aims to use the methods and language within choreography applied to the process of painting, in order to explore how the bodily aspect of painting can be a way of mapping motion.

Choreography is the creating and arranging of dance – collecting and organizing movements into order and pattern. In my project the choreography occurs in the framework of the painting process, dyeing of textiles. It is a form of meditative repetition as each piece of textile is cut, laid in water, folded and twisted, soaked color, twisted and turned, and hung up. The visual painting depends on the process of physical gestures. The movement depends on color and physical material in order to leave a visual impression.

The project uses choreology– a system for dance notation – as a critical tool and working method for recording and reflecting on the process of documentation and preservation of an ephemeral practice.
